SUBVERSIVENESS OF IMAGINATION

2022

Size
84 x 42 x 45 Inches
Understanding the colonial modalities of documentation and knowledge production, this sculpture critiques the erasure of subjective, lived experiences from dominant narratives. I explore how domestic interiors, often dismissed as apolitical, can serve as sites of resistance, introspection, and alternate knowledge systems. Through this work, I interrogate patriarchal arrangements of objects and spaces, revealing their role in shaping societal structures.
Objects like the patriarchal “head of family” chair become metaphors for inherited power, reimagined in fragile, unusable materials to subvert their authority. I draw from my personal experiences, from childhood observations of domestic spaces to the nuanced gender politics of furniture, to question how interiors shape and reflect identity, power, and introspection. This exploration aligns with my broader interest in centering marginalized narratives and creating alternative modes of understanding through art. By subverting the politics of interiors, this object without utility seeks to uncover the untold stories embedded within domestic spaces.
